The Royal London is part of The Barts and The London new hospitals program and is one of the largest ever PPPs in Europe. Construction alone is worth over GBP 1 billion, and the SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle), Capital Hospitals Limited, holds an operating contract of 42 years for a broad range of support services in these historic hospitals.
The Royal London Hospital, once home of the so-called "elephant man", dates back to 1740 and will be largely rebuilt to include London's leading trauma and emergency care centre, the capital's second largest children's hospital and one of Europe's largest renal units, with London's Air Ambulance, operating from the top of the new building.
The new hospitals will have the latest medical equipment via a contract with Siemens for the most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment technology until 2045. Other services include catering, cleaning, portering and laundry, as well as sterile services.
