Skanska, as 40 percent shareholder of Connect Plus, is responsible for the design, construction, financing and operation and maintenance of the M25 motorway for 30 years for the British Highways Agency.
The operation and maintenance is being carried out by a joint venture Balfour Beatty, Atkins and Egis. The widening works are being executed by a 50/50 Joint Venture of Skanska and Balfour Beatty.
The project comprises widening the existing 3 lane M25 motorway to 4 lanes. A total of 63 kilometers is being widened from three to four lanes in each direction. The widening is between junctions 16 to 23 and 27 to 30. The design and construction contract has a value of GBP 1 billion and the whole of the works are required to be concluded in a 38 month construction period. It includes installation and commissioning of motorway control systems, provision of low noise surfacing, new safety barriers and lighting, drainage and landscaping. The project also includes the complete refurbishment to current safety standards of both bores of the 1.2 kilometer long Hatfield Tunnel on the A1(M).
The main construction work began in May 2009 and is scheduled to be fully completed in July 2012 ready for the London 2012 Olympics. The M25, also known as the London Orbital Motorway, provides a ring road around Greater London and is one of the world’s busiest motorways. The project is also the fastest and largest widening contract carried out in UK, and probably elsewhere!
